Susan Tompkins

Susan was born and raised just outside of Manhattan on the Jersey side of the Hudson River. From a young age, she had a keen interest in art. Growing up she found inspiration by immersing herself in the galleries and museums of New York city. In college Susan studied drawing, painting, sculpture, printmaking, photography and Art History. During this time she had the great privilege of working closely with New York artist Randy Williams, who has been a great inspiration to her to this day. The aesthetics of Asian, African and ancient Greek and Roman figurative sculptures feed Susan's imagination. She is also enamored with the mixed media approaches of artists such as Henri Matisse. For a majority of her paintings, Susan utilizes a layering technique of glazing bright acrylic paints with torn paper and mixed media. The bulk and tonalities of many of her pieces are constructed of many layers underneath. Susan moved to Los Angeles in 2001 and has been thoroughly enjoying the West Coast ever since. Susan's artwork has been exhibited in solo and group shows in New York, California, Colorado and as far as Australia. "I communicate visual representations of my perception of the human spirit by using a mixed media technique and relating line and intense color to the subject's form. I highlight the abstract structure and natural beauty of figures to create playful images."
