Davor Vrankic

During the past twenty-five years I have been working on drawings using graphite lead 0,9 2B in a predominantly large format. My objective in using this basic technique is to exploit its effect more fully. Without using any model or precedence my intent is to create a kind of virtual image using all the visual experiences, which I have assimilated from classical painting, cartoon, cinema, video clips, and photography. I associate the cinema image frame and the distortions of the camera lens to Flemish painting. The small strokes in the drawings, while evoking the character of old engravings, also echo the black and white in photography or cinematography. The result is an image, which seems almost real, but is however entirely invented, combining the logic of synthetic images with classical drawing. I push my technique towards near photorealism, making my drawings appear as 'real' as possible. This approach is intended to address and critique the role of the image today, and to play upon its more and more ambiguous character.

My drawings are in collection of MOMA New York, Ronald S.Lauder, Museum OVERHOLLAND, Amsterdam, Museum Cognacq-Jay, Paris, Museum of Contemporary Art, Zagreb, Museum of Modern and Contemporary Art, Rijeka.
